"I have put My Spirit upon Him..."

Text: Isaiah 42:1

THE MESSIAH-SERVANT

One of the roles that the Messiah would fulfil was that of being a “Servant of the Lord”. Israel was given this role but the nation failed miserably. How would the Messiah succeed? God would give Him the Holy Spirit for His earthly life and ministry!

“Behold! My Servant whom I uphold,
My Elect One in whom My soul delights!
I have put My Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.”
Isaiah 42:1

1. Much of what God said in this text

a) These were uttered to Israel.
b) God gave similar promises.
c) But Israel failed utterly!

2. Behold! My Servant

a) The Messiah would show Israel that it is possible to succeed as God’s servant.
b) God would hold the Messiah up as the perfect example.

3. “Whom I uphold”

a) God had not failed to uphold Israel.
b) But the required response from Israel was not forthcoming.
c) God promised that He would uphold the Messiah.
d) And He would succeed in obeying as His Servant.

4. “My Elect One in whom My soul delights”

a) God had delighted in Israel too.
b) But the nation had disdained God and His law.
c) God would express His delight in His Messiah-Servant.

5. “I have put My Spirit upon Him”

a) Israel had not understood the significance of the ministry of the Spirit of God.
b) But the Messiah would.
c) He would let the Spirit of God direct Him in life and ministry.
d) He would seek to be filled with the Spirit of God.
e) He would respond appropriately as the Servant of the Lord to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
