BLESSED IS THE MAN WHO TRUSTS IN YOU
Text: Psalm 84
14 August 2016
BLESSED
As we celebrate the Lord’s blessings on us these past 40+3 years, let us look at the word “blessed” a little more closely, from a reading of Psalm 84.
Blessed are those who dwell in Your house;
They will still be praising You.
Blessed is the man whose strength is in You,
Whose heart is set on a pilgrimage.
O LORD of hosts,
Blessed is the man who trusts in You. Psalm 84: 4, 5, 12
Three statements are made using the word “blessed.” Let us seek to learn valuable lessons from a study of these statements. Psalm 84 was written by the sons of Korah. These were Levites who served the Lord in the Tabernacle and in the Temple built by King Solomon.
- Blessed are those who dwell in Your house Psalm 84:4
a. The sons of Korah speak of the blessings of the Lord
i. Upon those who serve Him in the Tabernacle/ Temple
ii. There is a physical reference to the House of the LORD
iii. The people who dwell in the Lord’s house were the Priests and the Levites
b. To actually dwell in the house of the Lord also meant
i. They were close to the Lord
ii. They were serving the Lord
iii. They were in a special relationship with God as His servant
- Blessed is the man whose strength is in You Psalm 84:5
a. The blessing of the Lord is not restricted to the priests and Levites
b. The Lord’s blessing is given to all who seek strength from the Lord
c. These are the faithful who seek to go to Jerusalem for special worship three times a year
i. They look to the Lord for strength to fulfil their pilgrimage attempts
ii. The road to Zion was often fraught with many challenges
iii. But they always found renewed strength in the Lord again and again
iv. Even when there were moments of tears, they found strength from the Lord
- Blessed is the man who trusts in You Psalm 84:12
a. The blessings of the Lord will be upon those who have learned to trust the Lord
b. Trust in the Lord is found in a man who: –
i. Loves and longs to be in the house of the Lord Psalm 84:2
ii. Cries out in prayer to the Lord of hosts Psalm 84:2
iii. Believes in the Lord as his God Psalm 84:3
iv. Regards the Lord as his King Psalm 84:3
v. Appreciates the LORD as his sun and shield Psalm 84:11
RENEWING OUR FAITH IN GOD
Let us seek to renew our faith in the Lord as meditate on this text.
For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
The LORD will give grace and glory;
No good thing will He withhold
From those who walk uprightly. Psalm 84:11
