Day 21

"The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me..."

Text: 2 Samuel 23:2

THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

It would be good to have a quick review of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament days.

1. To anoint

a) This meant endorsing.
b) It meant approval.
c) It meant support.

2. To empower

a) With authority.
b) With physical strength (as in the case of Samson).
c) With courage to rise and do what the occasion demands.

THE PART OF THE ANOINTED

The anointed must seek to fulfil his part. Should he fail to do his part, the ministry of the Spirit of God would also be curtailed.

1. Fulfilment of what God has commanded

a) Obedience
b) Faithfulness
c) Prayerfulness

2. Failure and its consequences

a) Curtailment of the ministry of the Holy Spirit
b) Departure of the Holy Spirit

ACTIVELY CONSCIOUS OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD

Though David was not sinless, nevertheless he sought to be conscious of the Holy Spirit in his life. In the last words of David, he testified of the Lord’s hand in his life.

“Now these are the last words of David.
Thus says David he son of Jesse;
Thus says the man raised up on high,
The anointed of the God of Jacob,
And the sweet psalmist of Israel:
‘The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me,
And His word was on my tongue.'”
2 Samuel 23:1-2

David was most conscious of how the Lord had called him and anointed him to be the king of Israel. He sought to be conscious of what it means to be a faithful servant of God. He developed his skill in the writing of psalms. He was conscious that the Spirit of God spoke through him both through his psalms and in the way he led the nation of Israel as God’s anointed king.
