"And I will pray the Father..."

Text: John 14:16

THE PROMISE OF BLESSINGS

The promise of God’s physical blessings is a wondrous thought. The psalmist David blessed the name of the Lord for the many wonderful blessings he experienced in his lifetime (Psalm 103). May we never take for granted the blessings that God has graciously promised.

THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit is astounding and must never be taken for granted! The greatest gift ever, this side of heaven, is the Holy Spirit Himself. The following text reveals a special feature that is often not appreciated sufficiently.

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper,
that He may abide with you forever-
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive,
because it neither sees Him nor knows Him;
but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
John 14:15-17

1. Context

a) Instruction of the Disciples.
b) The words of the Lord Jesus are no less than “commandments”.
c) They must be kept out of love for the Lord.

2. “And I will pray the Father”

a) The Lord Jesus has to personally ask the Father to give the Holy Spirit.
b) Though the Holy Spirit is a promise from God, it would take no one less than Jesus Himself to ask that this gift may be bestowed!

3. “He will give you another Helper”

a) The Giver is God the Father in response to the prayer of Jesus.
b) The Holy Spirit’s major role is that of “another Helper”.
i) The first Helper is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
ii) The Holy Spirit is “another Helper” (of the same kind).

4. “The Spirit of truth”

a) He will be characterised by “truth”.
b) The world cannot receive Him because it does not know Him at all.
c) He will be given to those who truly love the Lord Jesus and keep His commandments.
d) He was already with the disciples but shall soon be in them!
