From Spiritual Immaturity To Maturity

Studying the book of Hebrews
Last Saturday, we ended our study of the book of Hebrews. It has been a wonderful journey of learning that has spanned almost two years. We have gained many deep lessons through our study of this book. I hope that Hebrews has come alive to you in more ways than one especially with regards to our faith.
Remembering how we started…the problem of spiritual immaturity
I remember the first lesson that was taught which was on the problem of spiritual immaturity. It was highlighted that the author of Hebrews was addressing those who were still immature in their faith and in their spiritual walk, “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.” (Heb 5:12) They were still spiritually immature as they were unable to move from spiritual milk to the solid food of the Scriptures.
The maturing of our faith
“Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection,” (Heb 6:1)
The phrase “let us go” is written as an encouragement (hortatory subjunctive). This was the author’s exhortation for the brethren to move on…to go on towards perfection. This is a reference to spiritual maturity. As we seek to learn more and to grow our faith significantly, we will see ourselves being perfected through the Word of God. We will develop ourselves spiritually so that we can become more complete and mature.
Over the course of these almost two years, we have sought to learn deep things about the Lord Jesus and about our faith. We have seen the Lord like we have never seen before. He is our great High Priest and the Captain of our salvation. He is seen as the Minister of the New Covenant and the Author and Finisher of our faith. Through our study of the Lord Jesus and in understanding our faith more significantly, there should be a maturing of faith and life.
Signs of greater maturity
There are a number of considerations that we want to have in understanding the maturing of our own faith.
- The lessons from the book of Hebrews should have impacted and changed our life
- There should be greater depth in our appreciation of the Lord Jesus and in relating to Him.
- Our faith should be stronger and clearly evident in the context of our life and ministry
Let us thank God for the maturing of our faith and life.
Working towards even greater spiritual maturity
The challenge is for us to continue to work towards even greater maturity. No matter how much more “perfected” we may be, there is so much more for us to grow and mature in. Let us be challenged to not allow any sin and the weights of life to distract us. Let us be challenged to continue to grow in the Lord’s Word and in our faith so that we may truly develop greater spiritual maturity for our life and ministry.
