"And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant..."

Text: 1 Timothy 1:14

KEY THEOLOGICAL WORDS

A few words stand out in Paul’s vocabulary and they are found in 1 Timothy 1:13-14. “Mercy” was highlighted in 1 Timothy 1:13. The other major words are found in this text.

“And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant ,
with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.”

1 Timothy 1:14

1. “Grace of our Lord”

a) The context of this verse seems to suggest that Paul was making reference to God the Father.
b) The latter part of the verses made special reference to Christ Jesus.
c) Of course, both the Father and Christ Jesus have the authority to grant “mercy” and “grace”.

2. “Was exceedingly abundant”

a) This phrase describes the huge quantity of “grace” that the Lord possesses.
b) It is impossible to actually measure the amount of grace God bestows.

3. “Faith”

a) It is interesting to note the use of this word.
b) We normally speak of our having faith in God.
c) In this instance Paul mentioned the “faith” that Christ had in him.
d) It is a humbling and heart-wrenching application of this word.
i) Jesus believed that Paul would be a good and faithful servant.
ii) Thus He appointed him to be an apostle of His.

4. “Love”

a) This is another huge word in Paul’s vocabulary.
b) It is astonishing that Christ Jesus could still love him after all his sins.
c) The love of Christ stood out to him immensely.

5. “Which are in Christ Jesus”

a) In Christ are embodied all these glorious attributes.
b) The way Paul was saved and called to serve highlighted these things.
c) Theological words are not mere words to the apostle Paul.
d) These truths are highlighted to encourage Timothy and the faithful to draw much strength from the Lord for life and for ministry.
