"Having faith and a good conscience..."

Text: 1 Timothy 1:19

IMPORTANT THINGS THAT MUST NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

In spiritual warfare, there are some things that must never be forgotten. When remembered well, they will stand the soldier in good stead!

“Having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected,
concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck.”

1 Timothy 1:19

1. “Having faith”

a) Faith is something that must never be taken for granted.
b) We cannot please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6).
c) Faith is our shield in spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:16).
d) A great faith is to be desired.

2. “And a good conscience”

a) A good conscience is difficult to have.
b) But it is an important asset.
c) It is derived from living a life of integrity.
d) Timothy must ever endeavour to serve faithfully as he had been commissioned for ministry.

3. “Which some having rejected”

a) These false teachers did not have “faith and a good conscience”.
b) They were engaged in spreading false teachings.
c) Perhaps they had once upon a time been taught the Christian faith.
d) But along the way they had rejected both.

4. “Concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck”

a) These false teachers had made shipwreck of their lives.
b) As far as the faith is concerned they were now “enemies”.
c) They were to be opposed by Timothy in spiritual warfare.

DANGERS HIGHLIGHTED

Paul had to highlight the dangers that confront all who are engaged in ministry and in spiritual warfare. The danger of failure is very real indeed!

1. Faith must always be developed carefully.

2. A good conscience must be carefully maintained at all times.
