THE DEDICATION OF THE SOLOMONIC TEMPLE

2 Chronicles 6

1. Prayer of Solomon as he dedicated the Temple

a) Consciousness of who he is   (2 Chronicles 6:13)
i) Solomon may be a king But he is only “a servant” of the LORD
ii) Prayer appropriately reflects humility
b) Consciousness of who God is
i) A Covenant-keeping God   (2 Chronicles 6:14-15)
ii) He has fulfilled all He has said   (2 Chronicles 6:14-15)
c) Consciousness Crying out to God in humility
i) As a servant of God   (2 Chronicles 6:16)
ii) That God may hear prayers offered   (2 Chronicles 6:19-21)
d) Consciousness that Israel may falter and fail Because of sin   (2 Chronicles 6:22-40)
i) Israel may be defeated in battles
ii) The heavens may be shut up And there is no rain
iii) There may be famine
iv) If foreigners were to pray
v) If Israel has to defend itself against enemies
vi) If Israel is taken captive
e) Crying out to God in their day of trouble
i) May God hear
ii) May God forgive
iii) May God teach
iv) May the fear of God be taught

2. God’s Gracious Response

2 Chronicles 7:14
a) If My people who are called by My name
b) Will humble themselves
c) And pray and seek My face
d) And turn from their wicked ways
e) Then I will hear from heaven
f) And forgive their sins
g) And heal their land

3. In the Context of the New Covenant

a) A merciful and faithful High Priest   (Hebrews 2:17)
b) A great High Priest who has passed through the heavens   (Hebrews 4:14)
c) Jesus the Son of God   (Hebrews 4:14)

4. Appropriate Response

a) Let us hold fast our confession of faith
b) Let us come boldly to the throne of grace
i) That we may obtain mercy
ii) And find grace in time of need
