"Those who desire to be rich..."

Text: 1 Timothy 6:9

STRUGGLES OF THE HEART

The human heart struggles with many things. One of the most difficult struggles is the problem of covetousness. The apostle addressed this problem most directly.

“But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare,
and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men
in destruction and perdition.”
1 Timothy 6:9

1. “But those who desire to be rich”

a) The word “desire” needs to be understood further.

i) It describes intention.

ii) This person has a strong sense of purpose.

iii) It becomes his “will”.

b) His focus

i) To obtain wealth.

ii) This thought virtually drives him.

2. The dangers highlighted

a) The risk of falling into danger is strongly highlighted.

b) A short list is given.

i) Temptation.

ii) These temptations may well be “traps” (snare).

iii) Many foolish lusts (“desires”).

iv) They are also potentially harmful.

3. Dreadful consequences

a) They can drown people.

i) They are plunged into deep waters.

ii) They are potentially life-threatening.

b) “Destruction and perdition”

i) Ruin is in mind.

ii) The word “perdition” is often associated with the word “hell”.
