"Lovers of money..."

Text: 2 Timothy 3:2

A CLOSER EXAMINATION I

It would be highly instructive to examine 2 Timothy 3:2-4 in greater detail. These are sobering truths that must cause us to examine our faith and life. Let us look at the list of things Paul highlighted. It is highly probable that Paul had come across these people in real life situations.

1. “Men will be lovers of themselves”

a) The problem may lie in the human ego.
b) The carnality of man will cause the individual to love himself.

2. “Lovers of money”

a) This is a very real problem.
b) The world with its allure will cause people to end up with a love for money.

3. “Boasters”

a) People tend to be enamoured of their success and they become arrogant boasters.
b) The inclination to become boastful of achievements is very real indeed.

4. “Proud”

a) Pride is a deadly enemy of the soul; it is closely associated with being “boastful”.
b) It takes many forms and disguises, but essentially it is the same old problem of “pride”.

5. “Blasphemers”

a) This blasphemy may be against God.
b) It may also be blasphemy against man.

6. “Disobedient to parents”

a) The problem is usually seen in the family too.
b) These tend to have a difficult relationship with their parents.

7. “Unthankful”

a) They do not know how to be grateful for the things they have received from God or man.
b) They do not have thankful hearts.

8. “Unholy”

a) They do not display a life of holiness.
b) Neither do they exhibit dedication to the Lord and His cause. (Holiness is usually expressed in consecration of the heart and mind to the Lord.)
