"Manner of life..."
Text: 2 Timothy 3:10
BUT YOU HAVE CAREFULLY FOLLOWED II
The apostle Paul was a well-trained scholar. His teachings offered deep and erudite insights. He brought a depth of understanding that made him a truly outstanding theologian. However his focus was never just discussion and dissemination of knowledge. Doctrine and manner of life are inseparable.
A SOLID FOUNDATION
1. The basis is true and correct Biblical teachings.
2. The cornerstone is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
3. The apostle and prophets formed the foundations.
THE MANNER OF LIFE
The word used to translate “manner of life” is interesting and insightful.
1. The root word
a) It suggests that the person is leading the way.
b) He is the pathfinder.
c) He has been there.
d) He now offers “the manner of life”.
2. What was Paul’s manner of life?
The following may be highlighted. It is impossible to describe all the features of his very rich life.
a) As a servant of God
i) He had been enslaved by sin once.
ii) He was now a committed slave of God (Greek “doulos”).
iii) He was always first a bond-servant of the Lord then an apostle
b) As a wise master-builder
i) Paul built his life as a wise architect.
ii) He had laid a solid foundation.
iii) He had built using only gold, silver and precious stones as building material.
c) Total dedication
i) He was prepared to suffer for the Lord.
ii) He was totally dedicated to the service of the Lord.
d) Bearing much fruit
He made sure that the grace of God was not given to him in vain. He bore fruit that lasted.
