"Written for our admonition..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 10:11

THE WRITTEN SCRIPTURES

The Scriptures were carefully written for many reasons. They were written to record Biblical history. They were written to give vital knowledge about faith in God. They were also written for our admonition.

“Nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted,
and were destroyed by serpents;
nor complain, as some of them also complained,
and were destroyed by the destroyer.
Now all these things happened to them as examples,
and they were written for our admonition,
upon whom the ends of the ages have come.”
1 Corinthians 10:9-11

1. The sins recorded in the Scriptures

a) The time context- The forty years in the wilderness.

b) Two sins were highlighted:

i) Tempting the Lord

Paul applied it to the Lord Jesus Christ.

ii) Complaining against the Lord

The complains are to be understood in this light (Exodus 16:8).

c) The consequences are very grave.

i) Destroyed by serpents (the means of punishment).

ii) The destroyer (This is a reference to an angel of death; Exodus 12:23).

iii) The consequences of these sins are grave and solemn!

2. Two reasons highlighted

a) Examples

i) The bad examples of those who sinned against the Lord.

ii) These examples must not be taken lightly.

b) Admonition

i) For our instruction.

ii) To give us good counsel.

3. “Upon whom the ends of the ages have come”

a) Paul and all the apostles share this same belief.

b) When Christ Jesus came He signalled “the end of the ages”.

c) They believed that we are living “in the end days”.

d) All the ages will come to an end when Christ returns.
