TEACH US TO NUMBER OUR DAYS
Text: Psalm 90
16 July 2017
SOBERING DESCRIPTIONS OF LIFE
How brief our life is on earth! How very transient! The following are sobering descriptions of our short life on earth.
1. Like yesterday Psalm 90:4
A thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it is past
2. Like a watch in the night Psalm 90:4
A typical watch in the night is only a few hours
3. Like a flood Psalm 90:5
Flash-floods are in mind. They are very swift flowing.
4. Like a sleep Psalm 90:5
No matter how long a sleep may last, it is always “short.”
5. Like grass Psalm 90:5
All too soon it is mowed.
Moses used 5 similes in a row to communicate the brevity of life. The overall impact is stunning!
AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE
What would be an appropriate response? Let us ponder the following text.
Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:11-12
1. The fear of the LORD
(a) This is legitimate
(b) This is valid
(c) This is wise
(d) This is natural
2. The wrath of God is feared
(a) His wrath against iniquity
(b) His wrath was revealed to the children of Israel
i. Because of their unbelief
ii. Because of their lack of repentance
iii. Because of their defiance
3. Numbering our days
(a) Because life is so brief
(b) Because life is precarious
4. A heart of wisdom
(a) This is to be gained
(b) This is to be applied effectively in our life
Let us earnestly and humbly pray for the Lord’s mercy and compassion to be given to us so that our life may be meaningful and fruitful.
