"The image and glory of God..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 11:7

THE CREATION ACCOUNT

Paul went back to the creation account to help the Corinthians to appreciate what he was teaching.

“For a man indeed ought not to cover his head,
since he is the image and glory of God;
but woman is the glory of man.
For man is not from woman, but woman from man.
Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.
For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of
authority on her head, because of the angels.”
1 Corinthians 11:7-10

1. The creation of man (Adam)

a) Paul made reference to the creation account of Adam and Eve (Genesis 1-2).
b) Technically, both were made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).

2. Drawing special lessons from the creation account

a) Man was made first.
i) This was a lesson that needed to be emphasised.
ii) Man bore the image and glory of God.
b) “Woman is the glory of man”
i) She too was to reflect the glory of God ultimately.
ii) The special lesson to be learned was that she was to reflect the glory of her husband!
c) “For man is not from woman, but woman from man”
i) Adam was a direct creation from God.
ii) Thus, Paul highlighted the fact that he was the image and glory of God.
Man occupies a special place in the grand scheme of things.
d) “Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man”
i) Again, Paul drew a lesson from the creation account.
ii) God saw that man (Adam) could do with a “helper comparable to him” (Genesis 2:18).
iii) The lesson was obvious to Paul; man was given headship.
e) The woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
i) The head covering for the womenfolk represented the authority of her husband.
ii) The submission of the wife to her husband’s authority ought to be practised.
iii) Paul acknowledged the presence of angels. They are sent by God to minister to the heirs of salvation (Hebrews 1:14).
