"Love"

Text: 1 Corinthians 13:4

THE MANY VIRTUES OF LOVE

The more excellent way was the practice of what the Lord Jesus had exemplified and taught His disciples! The Lord taught His disciples that they must be characterised by love (John 15:9-13).

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy;
love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;
does not behave rudely, does not seek its own,
is not provoked, thinks no evil;
does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7

1. How love was not presented

It was not presented as emotions. Neither was it promoted as a mushy or romantic set of feelings.

2. How love was presented

Love was described by a series of “verbal ideas”. Genuine love expresses itself in actual and noble deeds.

3. Fifteen characteristics of a mature Christ-like love are featured. (But they are not the only ones!)

a) What “love” does not do.
i) It does not envy.
ii) It does not parade itself.
iii) It is not puffed-up (with arrogance).
iv) It does not behave itself rudely.
v) It does not seek its own.
vi) It is not provoked (easily).
vii) It does not think on evil things.
viii) It does not rejoice in iniquity.
b) What “love” does
i) It suffers long (patience).
ii) It is kind.
iii) It rejoices in the truth.
iv) It bears all things.
v) It believes all things (that are good and true).
vi) It hopes in all things.
vii) It endures all things.
