Text: Psalm 23

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over. Psalm 23:5

1. Note Change of imagery

a) This is a reference to an ancient practice in the Middle East
b) The visitor is given a full welcome by the host
c) It comes with protection from enemies

2. A table

a) Reference to food and drink
b) Refreshment for the weary traveler is truly a welcome sight

3. In the presence of my enemies

a) The visitor may have enemies after him
b) But when he enters into the house of his host the enemies cannot attack him
c) The host is bound by honour to give full protection to his guest

4. The provision

a) Oil to anoint the head
b) My cup runs over
i) Ample provision of food and drink
ii) The guest would want for nothing
