"Escaped from his hands."

Text: 2 Corinthians 11:33

DIVINE DELIVERANCE

Some of the experiences of Paul were more memorable than others. Some could not be forgotten. One particular incident was particularly remembered.

“In Damascus the governor, under Aretas the king,
was guarding the city of the Damascenes with a garrison,
desiring to arrest me;
but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall,
and escaped from his hands.”
2 Corinthians 11:32-33

1. “In Damascus”

a) Paul was recalling the incident recorded in Acts 9:23-25.

b) He had come to faith in Christ Jesus after the special manifestation of the Lord on the road to Damascus.

c) He began to share with people his new-found faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. “The governor, under Aretas the king”

a) He remembered King Aretas’ rule.

b) And the governor as well.

3. “Was guarding the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desiring to arrest me”

a) In the account in Acts 9:23-25, we read of the Jews who plotted his death.

b) In this text, Paul gave further information:

i) The Jews had probably asked for the help of the governor.

ii) They would not have the authority to arrest Paul since this was Damascus.

iii) The governor was willing to help the Jews arrest Paul.

4. “But I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall”

a) Paul had been successful in sharing the gospel.

b) Some had come to faith in Christ.

c) They had become disciples of the Lord.

d) They sought to help Paul escape from Damascus.

e) He was let down the wall of Damascus in a basket!

5. “And escaped from his hands”

a) God had enabled Paul to escape.

b) This was obvious Divine deliverance.

c) Such miracles must redound to the glory of God.
