"Which he saw concerning Israel"

Text: Amos 1:1

REVELATION FROM GOD

The ministry of the prophets is directly dependent upon the revelation of God. Amos noted this in the following words he penned.

“The words of Amos,
who was among the sheepbreeders of Tekoa,
which he saw concerning Israel…”
Amos 1:1

1. “Which he saw”

a) The word “saw” obviously has reference to something visible that can be seen.
b) In the book of Jeremiah, we see how God trained Jeremiah as a young prophet.

“Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
‘Jeremiah, what do you see?'”
Jeremiah 1:11

“And the word of the LORD came to me the second time, saying,
‘What do you see?'”
Jeremiah 1:13

2. Communication of the Word of God

The LORD explained to the children of Israel, how He would communicate His word to His servants.

“Hear now My words:
If there is a prophet among you,
I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision;
I speak to him in a dream.”
Numbers 12:6

a) “The word of the LORD Himself”
i) God reveals Himself in a vision.
ii) He may also reveal His message in a dream.
b) The responsibility of the prophet:
i) To see and to understand.
ii) Ultimately to proclaim that word of the Lord.

GOD SPEAKING TO HIS PEOPLE

God has always been faithful in speaking to His people. The most important Word that God has given is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. The Apostle John described Jesus aptly as the Word of God (John 1:1,14).

“God, who at various times and in various ways
spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,
has in these last days spoken to us by His Son,
whom He has appointed heir of all things,
through whom also He made the worlds.”
Hebrews 1:1-2

Amos had dreams and visions from God! We have been given the Lord Jesus Christ Himself! How privileged we are to have the life and the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ recorded in the Scriptures. Let us seek to comprehend what the Lord wishes to reveal to us in His Word!
