The Blessing Of The Mercies Of God

The manifold blessings of God

I stand amazed at the bountiful blessings that God has showered upon our lives. He has given so much for us to appreciate. King David wrote of his appreciation and praise of the Lord’s blessings, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits:” (Ps 103:2) It is most crucial that we do not forget all the benefits that we have received.

Yet if there is one particular blessing that I would like to highlight, it would be the mercies of God. This was something that David wrote about also. How should we appreciate the mercies of God?

1. A merciful God

“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.” (Ps 103:8)

Mercy, among other blessings, is an attribute of God. God is a merciful God. It is what characterises Him among other attributes. David extends the idea of His mercy further in declaring that His mercy is abounding. God reveals His abounding mercies through acts of mercy to the people of Israel. (Ps 103:7) Despite their sinfulness, God showed them His mercies again and again. God’s mercy is also associated with His graciousness and in Him being slow to anger. When we consider the sins in our life, we thank God for being a God of mercy and grace. As He is a merciful God, “He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities.” (Ps 103:10) Let us appreciate and give thanks for our merciful God.

2. The greatness of God’s mercies

How great is the quality of the mercies of God? David wrote, “For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;” (Ps 103:11) How high is the heavens above the earth? So great is the quality of the mercy of God given to us. Through His great mercy, God seeks to deal with the sins in our life, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” (Ps 103:12) The sins in our life would be far removed from us. As God is merciful, the Lord would erase our sins forever.

The Lord seeks to extend His great mercies to those who fear Him. Let us cultivate a greater sense of awe and reverence of the Lord…to fear the Lord. Let us deeply appreciate the greatness of the mercies of God.

3. The eternity of God’s mercies

“But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him,” (Ps 103:17) God’s mercy is something that is eternal. It is from everlasting to everlasting. It transcends all things. His mercies have been given from one generation to another. There is no end to the mercies of God.

The mercies of God which are eternal stand in contrast to man’s life. David wrote, “As for man, his days are like grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.” (Ps 103:15,16) Man is only temporal and does not last. Like the grass that flourishes just for a moment, so is the life of a man. But the mercies of God would last forever. How should we respond to the blessing of the greatness of the mercies of God? Let us recognise how much we need the mercies of God in our life. Let us not forget this wonderful benefit among many others and bless His name. Let us fear the Lord for in doing so the Lord’s mercies will continue to be extended to us.
