Habakkuk
Day
Day 14

"And watch to see what He will say to me"

Text: Habakkuk 2:1

WATCHING AND PRAYING

Habakkuk exemplifies for us the practice of praying and watching. Praying is never the last thing. It must always be combined with watching and listening to the answers that God would give.

“I will stand my watch
And set myself on the rampart,
And watch to see what He will say to me,
And what I will answer when I am corrected.”
Habakkuk 2:1

1. The imagery of a Watchman

a) In ancient days cities had walls built around them.
b) A rampart was built as an embankment and part of a wall to fortify security.
c) The task of the watchman was to patrol the wall and to be alert at all times.

2. The spiritual watchman

a) Ezekiel was called to this ministry of being a watchman (Ezekiel 3:17).
b) Habakkuk saw himself as a watchman too in this text.

3. Habakkuk as a faithful watchman

a) “I will stand my watch and set myself on the rampart”
i) He was obviously not the only prophet.
ii) A group of watchmen will take turns to be on duty.
iii) It is a lonely and difficult task to perform.
b) “And watch to see what He will say to me”
i) In the text found in Ezekiel 3, the Lord said that He would speak to His watchman.
ii) Habakkuk had presented his prayers to God.
iii) He would now watch to see what God would say to him.
c) “And what I will answer when I am corrected”
i) Habakkuk expected to be corrected by the Lord.
ii) He knew that his knowledge and understanding of God was limited.
iii) He hoped that God would give answers to his questions and observations.
iv) He also hoped that he would be able to answer the Lord when he is corrected.
v) Habakkuk’s spirit was good for it was humble and meek.
vi) He waited upon the Lord with bated breath for His response.
