SEEK GOD AND LIVE

EXAMPLES OF PEOPLE WHO SOUGHT GOD

In the Old Testament, the ancient prophets were good examples of those who sought the Lord God!

  1. Daniel

a) He was a high-ranking official in Nebuchadnezzar’s empire

b) He sought to understand prophecy

c) He sought to understand the Lord as One who could reveal the prophetic word

d) He found what he sought for

  1. Amos

a) He was a sheep-breeder till God called him to be a prophet (Amos 7:15)

b) He knew that he had to seek God in order to fulfil his ministry as a prophet

c) God revealed many things to Amos (Amos 3:7)

THE MESSAGE OF THE PROPHET AMOS

Having found the Lord God from personal experience, Amos has this word to proclaim to ancient Israel.

For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel:

“Seek Me and live;

But do not seek Bethel, nor enter Gilgal,

Nor pass over to Beersheba;

For Gilgal shall go into captivity,

And Bethel shall come to nothing. 

Seek the LORD and live,

Lest He break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it,

With no one to quench it in Bethel.”      Amos 5:4-6

  1. Seek Me

a) Effort must be made to seek the Lord

b) No effort must be spared to seek Him

c) The effort put in will reflect the degree of sincerity of the heart

  1. And live

a) God desires to give life

b) He does not desire to judge nor take away life

c) The Giver of life is more than happy and willing to give fullness of life

OUR CHALLENGE TODAY       

Does this word of advice still hold for us today? The short answer is “Yes!” The words may be stated differently, but the meaning is essentially the same!

But seek first the kingdom of God

And all these things shall be added to you.     Matthew 6:33
