The Confrontation
Text: John 5:17-18
THE CONFRONTATION
The Jews must have found Jesus and they confronted Him as to why He had broken the Sabbath. They had apparently forgotten that the poor man had been unwell for thirty-eight years. He had just been made well by a powerful miracle performed by the Lord Jesus Christ!
THE ANSWER OF THE LORD JESUS
Jesus was not perturbed by this confrontation in any way. Neither was He afraid of the wicked plots of the Jews to persecute and to kill Him!
Jesus: “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” John 5:17
1. “My Father”
a. Jesus was referring to God.
b. He called God “My Father”.
i. To show how close He was to God the Father.
ii. To show that He was only doing what His Father wanted Him to do- even if it was on the Sabbath!
2. “My Father has been working until now”
a. Jesus was claiming that a miracle involved God.
b. God was the One who performed the miracle.
c. Jesus was His Son through whom He worked.
d. If the Jews wanted to charge Jesus with breaking the Sabbath, then they are charging God Himself.
3. “And I have been working”
a. Jesus was doing what His Father wanted Him to do.
b. He was saying that the Father had wanted Him to heal the man with the infirmity on the Sabbath.
c. He was only obeying God in serving Him faithfully.
THE THOUGHTS OF THE JEWS
They were even angrier than ever after hearing this answer. They were determined to kill Jesus!
1. They did not believe that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah.
2. They saw Jesus as one who broke the Sabbath Law.
3. They did not like the implications Jesus was making.
a. That He was the special Son of God.
b. This would mean that He was Deity; that He was Divine.
He would then be equal in status with God!
