The General Understanding of the Disciples
Text: John 6:10-11
THE GENERAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE DISCIPLES
The answers of the two disciples represented the general understanding of the group. Their approach was to assess things from a viewpoint that was limited:
1. Human
2. Practical
3. Monetary
Though not wrong in themselves, they were essentially inadequate. Faith in the Lord had not been given due consideration!
TAKING CHARGE
Jesus took charge of the situation. He gave instructions that must have puzzled the disciples! What was their Teacher going to do next?
“Then Jesus said, ‘Make the people sit down.’ Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted.”
John 6:10-11
1. “Then Jesus said, ‘Make the people sit down’
a. The Lord was a good organizer.
b. His disciples were going to participate in a spectacular miracle.
2. The size of the multitude
a. We often read about “the multitudes” in the Gospels.
b. Here, the men numbered five thousand.
c. And that is not counting the women and the children!
3. “And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks”
a. The giving of thanks for food is natural.
b. Jesus prayed for His Father’s blessing.
c. There was such a wonderful consciousness of the Presence of God.
4. The distribution of the gift of loaves and fish
a. The disciples distributed the loaves and fish to the multitudes.
b. To their astonishment the multitudes were fed- “as much as they wanted”!
Jesus was not limited in anyway, nor by anything. There was nothing too hard for the Lord!
