An Awkward Moment
Text: John 6: 16-18
AN AWKWARD MOMENT
Jesus had gone to the mountain all alone. The disciples were left on their own. What should they do next?
“Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing.”
John 6:16-18
1. “Now when evening came”
a. Jesus had stayed on the mountain.
b. They knew that their Master loved His moments of solitude spent in prayer.
c. There was no word from Him though the evening had come.
d. Should they wait for Jesus to come down from the mountain?
2. “His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and went over the sea to Capernaum”
a. The disciples did not really know what they should have done.
b. They decided that they would go over to Capernaum.
c. But how would Jesus make His way there?
3. “And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them”
a. They were half-expecting Jesus to come to them.
b. But instead of waiting, they decided that they would wait for Him in Capernaum.
c. It was already dark for the sun had gone down for the day.
d. Where was Jesus? Why did He not come down from the mountain?
e. The disciples had no answer!
f. But they had decided that they would take the boat to Capernaum.
4. “Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing”
a. This was not the second storm the disciples were experiencing.
b. In the first storm, Jesus was resting in the boat (Mark 4:35-41).
c. He calmed the storm with a word!
d. But the Lord was not with them this time round.
e. How should they respond?
This was truly an awkward and potentially dangerous moment for the disciples!
