Caught In A Storm
Text: John 6:19-21
CAUGHT IN A STORM
The disciples were in a dilemma. They were caught in a sudden storm. Some of the disciples were fishermen and they had faced such storms before. In the first storm they were terrified. In this storm, that primal fear did not control them. A different kind of fear affected them adversely. The incident of the second storm was recorded in two other gospels (Matthew 14:22-33; Mark 6:45-52).
“So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid. But He said to them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid.’ Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.”
John 6:19-21
1. “So when they had rowed about three or four miles”
a. This was quite a distance.
b. And the disciples had left their Teacher behind on the mountain!
2. “They saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat”
a. The disciples knew that it was Jesus walking towards them.
b. But He was walking on the sea!
c. And there they were rowing their boat in a sudden storm.
3. “They were afraid”
a. The disciples thought Jesus was an apparition… a ghost (Matthew 14:26; Mark 6:49).
b. This fear was just as real as their fear of death.
4. “But He said to them, ‘It is I; do not be afraid.’”
a. Gently, Jesus calmed the fears of His disciples.
b. They need not fear; He was not a ghost!
5. “Then they willingly received Him into the boat”
a. And well they should!
b. This was their Teacher they had left behind on a mountain!
6. “And immediately the boat was at the land where they were going”
a. The storm had abated.
b. Jesus was with His disciples once again.
c. They had reached Capernaum safely!
