An Important Word of Correction
Text: John 6:32-33
AN IMPORTANT WORD OF CORRECTION
Jesus had to correct the wrong understanding of the multitudes. They had misread and misunderstood the Scriptures concerning Manna from heaven.
“Then Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’”
John 6:32-33
1. “Most assuredly, I say to you”
a) This was the typical formula Jesus employed when He wanted to do the following:
i) To emphasise a truth.
ii) To highlight something of vital significance.
b) The multitudes had cited the Scriptures.
c) They had also expressed their belief in the greatness of Moses in giving bread from heaven.
d) On both counts they were wrong.
2. The Heavenly Giver
a) It was God who gave the Manna.
b) Moses was only His servant.
3. An even more important Gift
a) God had given “the true bread from heaven”.
b) He had given to the world the “true bread”.
WHAT BREAD REPRESENTS
What was this discussion about? The following things were emphasised:
1. Bread represents the following:
a) Necessary food for life; without food we will die.
b) Bread (food) sustains life and gives strength.
2. The Bread of God
a) This is a reference to Jesus.
b) He is the true and necessary food for the soul.
c) We need to partake of the Bread of God for eternal life and for strength for life on earth.
