THE BELIEVER AND THE GOVERNING AUTHORITIES I

A. Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities (Romans 13:1a)

1. This is well-exemplified and taught in the Old Testament

2. The Monarchy of Israel

a) Saul
b) David and Saul (1 Samuel 24, 26)

3. The Divided kingdom

a) Israel- the Northern Kingdom
b) Judah- the Southern Kingdom

4. This was also well-taught by the Lord Jesus Christ

a) Render to Caesar (Matthew 22:15-22)
b) Render to God (Matthew 22:15-22)

B. For there is no authority except from God (Romans 13:1b)

1. Understand the concept of Divine authority

2. God’s sovereignty

3. Including ancient powerful empires

a) Assyria
b) Babylon
c) Medes-Persians
d) Greeks
e) Romans

C. And the authorities that exist are appointed by God (Romans 13:1c)

1. Appointed by God!

2. Even though they may not appear to be great!

3. The authorities that exist in Paul’s time

a) Roman rule
b) Slavery
