Following Does Not Mean Believing
Text: John 6:37
FOLLOWING DOES NOT MEAN BELIEVING
Multitudes had followed Jesus. They had seen Him perform mighty miracles. They had heard Him preach and teach deep truths about the Lord God! There were several things that indicated the reality that the multitudes did not really have faith.
1. They were planning to force Jesus to be their earthly king (John 6:15).
2. They were asking Jesus for more signs (John 6:30).
3. They thought more highly of Moses than of Jesus (John 6:31).
4. They were asking Jesus to provide them with physical bread always (John 6:34).
They were following Jesus with their own agenda in mind. There was a lack of genuine faith in the Lord.
THOSE WHO TRULY COME TO JESUS BECAUSE OF GENUINE FAITH
How would we know if people were following Jesus out of genuine faith or for selfish reasons?
“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.”
John 6:37
1. A special work of God the Father
a) Jesus told them about a special work of God the Father.
b) He is described as the Giver.
i) He is the One who draws true believers to Jesus.
ii) He is the One who gives the true followers to Him.
2. The ones whom God draws will come to Jesus
a) Those who come to Jesus would have known God as the Father.
b) They will find that they are drawn to Jesus.
c) They will come to Jesus for the following reasons:
i) They recognise Jesus as the Saviour.
ii) They recognise Him as the Bread of life.
iii) They come to Him in faith.
iv) They love and admire the Lord Jesus.
v) They abide in Him and His words.
3. “And the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out”
a) Jesus will recognise and receive those who come to Him in faith.
b) He will not cast them out. He will receive them as the children of God and give them life eternal.
