Identification of the Multitudes
Text: John 6:60-61
IDENTIFICATION OF THE MULTITUDES
John attempted to identify the multitudes who came to Jesus. The following groups may be discerned:
1. The Jews
a) They were the “leaders”.
b) Some were chief priests.
c) Some were scribes.
2. Disciples
a) Some even saw themselves as “disciples”.
b) This may be used as a general term to describe anyone who is interested in learning from Jesus.
THE REACTION OF THE SO-CALLED DISCIPLES
John noted the reaction of some of these so-called disciples as they listened to Jesus.
“Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard
this, said, ‘This is a hard saying; who can understand it?’
When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained
about this, He said to them, ‘Does this offend you?’”John 6:60-61
1. “Many of His disciples”
a) Perhaps some of these were among “The Jews”.
b) Or they had been affected by The Jews.
c) They were showing signs of rejecting what Jesus had taught.
d) But they tried to put the blame on Jesus.
e) Two things were highlighted:
i) What Jesus taught were “hard things”.
ii) They were difficult to understand.
iii) What they were doing was to politely reject what Jesus taught.
iv) They had no faith or life in them.
v) They were refusing to accept what Jesus taught.
2. Jesus knew what they were thinking
a) He knew that they were offended and they had stumbled over this teaching.
b) He knew exactly what their complaining meant. They were rejecting all that Jesus had taught!
