Attendance at the Feast of Tabernacles
Text: John 7: 10-13
ATTENDANCE AT THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES
After their conversation with Jesus, His brothers went ahead to go on their own to Jerusalem to attend the Feast of Tabernacles. The reasons for their attendance was different from that of Jesus.
“But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, ‘Where is He?’ And there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, ‘He is good’; others said, ‘No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.’ However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.”
John 7:10-13
1. Two separate groups
a. The brothers of Jesus travelled on their own to Jerusalem.
b. Jesus travelled with His disciples to Jerusalem too.
2. Jesus
a. He decided that He would go to Jerusalem “in secret”.
b. He would appear in Jerusalem quietly.
3. The Jews
a. These Jewish leaders were on the look-out for Jesus.
b. If they could, they would arrest Him or even kill Him.
4. Divided opinions
a. There were some who said that Jesus was good.
b. There were others who disagreed (The Jews, for example).
c. They opposed those who spoke well of Jesus.
d. They sought to speak ill of Him on every occasion.
5. Fear of the Jews
a. Many were afraid of the Jewish authorities.
b. Thus, they did not dare to speak up openly for Jesus at all.
6. The wisdom of Jesus
Jesus knew the scene all too well. Thus, He opted to go to Jerusalem “in secret”. There was high tension in Jerusalem. He did not want His followers to end up battling with the Jews.
