Jesus the Master-Teacher
Text: John 7:39
JESUS THE MASTER-TEACHER
Jesus is the most wonderful Teacher ever! He knew the hearts of the people who came to Him. He knew the following things about them:
1. He knew their deepest needs:
a. Spiritually hungry
b. Spiritually thirsty
2. He also knew their uncertainties:
a. Their doubts
b. Their fears
3. He was most gracious.
a. He offered spiritual bread.
b. He offered living water.
LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE
Jesus knew that soon His work on earth would be done. He would have to die on the cross to provide salvation from our sins. His offer of living water had a deeper reference. It had to do with the future.
“But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive;
for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”John 7:39
1. John’s explanation
a. John felt he had to explain what Jesus said (John 7:37-38).
b. At least two levels of thought may be found here.
i. Salvation is represented by the giving of living water.
ii. The work of the Spirit of God in the life of the believer after he has believed in Jesus.
2. The gift of the Holy Spirit
a. Those who believe in Jesus would be given the Holy Spirit.
b. He would have a number of roles to fulfil:
i. He would be a special Seal that we belong to God (Ephesians 1:13).
ii. He would be the Guarantee of our salvation (Ephesians 1:14).
iii. He would be deeply involved in the life of the believer (Romans 8).
c. The Holy Spirit would not be given till after Jesus was glorified (a reference to His resurrection).
