Pointed Questions
Text: John 8: 19-20
POINTED QUESTIONS
The first time Jesus appealed to God as His witness, the Jews were silent (John 5:36-37). When Jesus mentioned His Father as His witness again, the Jews raised a pointed question.
“Then they said to Him, ‘Where is Your Father?’ Jesus answered, ‘You know neither Me nor My Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.’ These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one laid hands on Him, for His hour had not yet come.”
John 8:19-20
1. “Where is Your Father”
a. Jesus had to discern whether the Pharisees were seeking the truth.
b. Or whether they were just asking a spurious question.
c. Jesus decided that the Pharisees were not really interested in hearing His answer.
2. “Jesus answered”
There were two parts to His answer:
a. “You know neither Me”
i. This was an obvious observation.
He had taught publicly on many occasions.
ii. He had many public debates with the Pharisees.
iii. His teachings and His miracles had not been given much consideration or credit.
iv. It was clear that they did not know Jesus at all
b. “Nor My Father”
i. They did not know God personally.
ii. They were obviously not born again (John 3:3).
iii. They could not see the kingdom of God the Father.
iv. If they could not see Jesus, it was obvious they did not know the Father either.
c. “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also’
i. The relationship between Jesus and the Father is an inseparable one.
ii. Knowledge of one would lead to knowledge of the other.
3. “His hour had not yet come”
a. Jesus taught boldly in public and in this instance in the Treasury section of the Temple.
b. The hour of His arrest, trial and death had not yet come.
