Turning Nasty
Text: John 8: 48-49
TURNING NASTY
The Jews did not like to hear Jesus declaring that “they were not of God!”. At this remark of Jesus, they turned nasty. They revealed their true colours.
“Then the Jews answered and said to Him, ‘Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?’ Jesus answered, ‘I do not have a demon; but I honour My Father, and you dishonour Me.’”
John 8:48-49
1. The insults hurled at Jesus
a. “Do we not say rightly”
i. They still insisted that they were right.
ii. Once again they rejected what Jesus said about why they could not believe Him.
b. Two insults:
i. “You are a Samaritan”
ii. “And have a demon”
2. Being called a Samaritan
a. The Jews despised Samaritans.
b. They would have nothing to do with them.
c. To call Jesus a Samaritan was to hurl a very great insult at Jesus!
3. “And have a demon”
a. This was an even harsher insult.
b. Jesus was accused of being possessed by a demon.
c. This was nothing short of a blasphemy.
d. The Jews were on the brink of spiritual disaster if they continued to pursue this line of thought.
4. Jesus’ reply
a. He rejected the accusation of being possessed by a demon.
b. It was obvious that the Jews were trying to destroy His good name in every possible way.
5. Honour
a. Jesus had always sought to honour His Father.
b. On the other hand, the Jews have always sought to dishonour Jesus.
