The Person of Abraham
Text: John 8: 56-57
THE PERSON OF ABRAHAM
Abraham has a very significant status in the history and theology of Israel, and for good reason.
1. He was the father of the nation of Israel.
2. God honoured him and gave to him a special covenant (Genesis 15).
3. He has just about the highest honour anyone may receive, humanly speaking.
CLAIMING GREATER HONOUR THAN THAT OF ABRAHAM’S
Jesus could not but state the truth as He knew it. He was truly greater than Abraham.
“‘Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.’ Then the Jews said to Him, ‘You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?’”
John 8:56-57
1. The claim of Jesus
a) “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day”
i) This is possible only through a prophetic vision.
ii) If Abraham saw the day of the Lord Jesus, then Jesus had been in existence long ago.
iii) Abraham personally rejoiced to see Jesus… the prophesied Messiah.
b) “And he saw it and was glad”
i) Abraham had seen and he had understood.
ii) He was glad for it was a privilege given to him to see the Messiah in a prophetic vision.
2. “Then the Jews said to Him”
a) They could hardly believe what they were hearing.
b) This seemed a ridiculous statement.
c) Jesus was not yet fifty.
i) Less than fifty years, one was considered young.
ii) Status came with age.
d) They ridiculed Jesus and His claim.
e) To them this was a preposterous statement.
f) The claim of having greater honour than Abraham was rejected outright.
g) There was no way in which the Jews would accept what Jesus said.
