"Behold, I will make you small among the nations"

Text: Obadiah 2

AMBITIONS OF NATIONS

All nations have ambitions. The following are the reasons why nations choose to go to war.

1. Desire for greater power.

2. Covetousness for more wealth.

3. Desire control of other nations.

4. Sometimes, ambitions are disguised as “righteousness”.

a) Righting the wrongs of other countries (usually weaker ones)

b) In the name of defense.

DELUSIONS OF NATIONS

All nations also suffer from delusions. But delusions are not simple problems. Many suffer because of war.

1. Delusion of success

2. Delusion of setting up “utopia”

3. Delusion of world domination

4. Delusion of might

GOD’S WORD OF WARNING TO EDOM

God sent a chilling word of warning to Edom. He would cut Edom down to size.

“Behold, I will make you small among the nations;
You shall be greatly despised.”
Obadiah 2

1. “Behold”

a) This may have been a startling thought to Edom.

b) Nevertheless, this would be true and it would come to pass.

2. “I will make you small among the nations”

a) Edom suffered from the delusion of grandeur.

b) God would make the nation of Edom small.

3. “You shall be greatly despised”

a) Every nation likes to be recognized.

b) It likes to be thought of as “great and mighty”.

c) God would cause other nations to despise Edom.

d) This would come about through the defeat and the conquest of Edom by other nations.
