A Claim that Drew Great Hostility
Text: John 8: 58-59
A CLAIM THAT DREW GREAT HOSTILITY
The Jews had looked down on Jesus because He was not even fifty years old! But how old was Jesus?
“Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.’ Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.”
John 8:58-59
1. Jesus answered the Jews concerning their statement that He was not yet fifty
a) “Most assuredly”
i) This phrase was used when Jesus wanted to affirm an important truth.
ii) What He was going to announce next ought to be given due consideration.
b) “Before Abraham was”
i) Abraham belonged to the annals of ancient history.
ii) Jesus declared that He was “before Abraham”.
iii) He was in existence before Abraham.
c) A special claim: “I AM”
i) This was the way God declared who He was to Moses.
ii) He declared “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14).
iii) Only One who is truly God could ever make such a statement.
d) Jesus declared His deity too
i) The concept behind this statement… was to declare One who is eternal.
ii) Only God can make such a claim.
iii) Jesus was making a claim to being eternal too.
2. The reaction of the Jews
a) They took up stones to throw at Jesus.
b) To them, this was nothing short of blasphemy.
3. A miraculous escape
a) Jesus somehow escaped being stoned.
b) He walked out of the temple unscathed.
God was certainly there to protect His only begotten Son from being stoned to death!
