"Oh, how Esau shall be searched out"

Text: Obadiah 6

THE PLUNDER OF EDOM

Even as Obadiah wrote this short book, and though he held out the possibility of salvaging Edom, he knew that the proud nation would not repent!

“Oh, how Esau shall be searched out!
How his hidden treasures shall be sought after!”
Obadiah 6

1. “Oh”

a) This suggests lament and sorrow.
b) Obadiah wrote sadly that Edom does not seem to repent.
c) The options had been laid before them.
i) To be plundered by robbers and thieves.
ii) To be gathered by grape-gatherers.

2. “How Esau shall be searched out”

a) The thieves and plunderers would search out Edom.
b) The foreign nations had come to search for treasures from Edom.

3. “How his hidden treasures shall be sought after”

a) Treasures are often made up of two elements:
i) Actual treasures
ii) Rumoured treasures
b) The latter… rumoured treasures
i) This is even worse.
ii) Plunderers have light ears.
iii) They hear rumours or legends of treasures.
iv) Almost all nations have such stories circulating.
v) These would fuel the imagination.
vi) Plunderers would leave no stone unturned to obtain these supposed treasures.
vii) Great cruelty may be performed against the Edomites to force them to reveal where their secret treasures were.
viii) Many would suffer greatly and some would lose their lives for treasures that may not even be in existence.

The nation’s demise was certain. It would also be a very ignoble and ugly end of the nation!
