The Teachings of Jesus
Text: John 9: 4
THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS
Jesus was committed to the work of teaching people. He would preach to the multitudes. And if they were truly interested and committed, they could become His disciples.
THE WORKS OF JESUS
Jesus did more than teach and preach to the people about God and His Kingdom. There were many occasions when His works helped people to understand Him and His teachings better.
“I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.”
John 9:4
1. “I must work the works of Him who sent Me”
a) Jesus saw the works that He did were the works that God wanted Him to do.
b) He had always taught people
i) That He was sent by God to proclaim His words (John 3:34).
ii) That He must finish the works that He has been given to do (John 4:34).
c) He was repeating Himself
i) For the sake of all who saw Him.
ii) For the sake of His own disciples.
2. “While it is day”
a) Jesus worked with a sense of great urgency.
b) The ancient world divided time into two segments.
i) Day (Beginning with sunrise and ending with sunset.)
ii) Night (When the moon rises till it goes down.)
c) Work was always done in the day.
3. The night comes when no man can work
a) In the ordinary sense of the word:
i) This was the common understanding.
ii) This was common practice.
iii) One works when opportunity arises.
b) In the figurative sense of the word:
i) Jesus knew that the Jews would impede His work.
ii) He also knew that in a short while’s time He would be killed; His work would then cease.
