Negative Influence
Text: John 9: 16
NEGATIVE INFLUENCE
As may be expected, the Pharisees were opinionated. Some were more vocal than others. They tried to influence people negatively. This time round, however, the Pharisees were quarrelling among themselves.
“Therefore some of the Pharisees said, ‘This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.’ Others said, ‘How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?’ And there was a division among them.”
John 9:16
1. “The Pharisees”
a) This was a sect of Judaism.
b) The members were called Pharisees.
c) The word “Pharisee” means “a separated person”.
d) They separated themselves from many people whom they despised.
e) They were very quick to judge people who did not believe as they did.
2. “Some of the Pharisees said”
a) This group were quick to judge Jesus.
b) They declared that Jesus was not a man of God.
c) Their reasoning: Jesus did not keep the Sabbath.
d) They were hinting that Jesus was therefore a sinner (a Sabbath breaker).
3. “Others said”
a) These were also Pharisees.
b) They disagreed among themselves.
c) They objected to the opinion of the first group of Pharisees.
d) They argued against them.
i) How could a sinner perform this miracle of healing a man who was born blind?
ii) They interpreted the miracle as a sign from God.
4. “And there was a division among them”
a) The Pharisees were against the Sadducees. (The Sadducees were another sect within Judaism. They only believed in the writings of Moses and rejected all other portions of Scripture. They also rejected the belief in angels.)
b) They were also against the Herodians (the politically-minded Jews).
c) Now the Pharisees were divided among themselves.
