The Anger of the Pharisees
Text: John 9: 28-29
THE ANGER OF THE PHARISEES
The Pharisees became angry with the former blind man as he spoke to them.
“Then they reviled him and said, ‘You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.’”
John 9:28-29
1. “Then they reviled him”
a) The word used is significant – “reviled”.
i) The Pharisees were very angry.
ii) They showed their anger vehemently towards the former blind man.
b) The following nuances are to be noted:
i) To curse
ii) To slander
iii) To speak evil of
iv) To insult
2. “You are His disciple”
a) They accused the blind man of being a disciple of Jesus.
b) They did not think much of Jesus.
c) They think even less of the former blind man.
3. “We are Moses’ disciples”
a) This was their proud claim.
b) This doesn’t mean that they were truly good disciples of Moses… despite their claim.
4. “We know that God spoke to Moses”
a) Moses was indeed a great servant of God.
b) But Moses was very different from the Pharisees.
i) He was humble and prayerful.
ii) He was compassionate and wise.
5. “As for this fellow, we do not know where He is from”
This was the regard of the Pharisees concerning Jesus! They despised Him. They had no respect at all for the Lord Jesus Christ. They did not even know where He was from and neither did they care!
