"For behold, the LORD is coming"

Text: Micah 1:3

IDOLATROUS PRACTICES IN THE DAYS OF THE KINGS

Many of the kings were drawn towards idolatry. When Israel split into two kingdoms, Jeroboam was the king who introduced calf-worship with these words:

“It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem.
Here are your gods, O Israel,
which brought you up from the land of Egypt!”
1 Kings 12:28

1. “Here are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt”

a) The king “made two calves of gold” (1 Kings 12:28).
b) This thing became a sin (1 Kings 12:30).

2. All the kings of Israel

a) From Jeroboam to Hoshea.
b) Hoshea was the last king of Israel.
c) His reign coincided with the reigns of Jotham and Ahaz, kings of Judah.
d) Hoshea led a conspiracy against king Pekah and took over the reins of the Northern Kingdom of Israel (2 Kings 15:30).

THE COMING OF THE LORD GOD TO ISRAEL

God had tolerated the reigns of the nineteen kings of Israel. He was now rising up to witness against His people and to deal with the problem of idolatrous worship once and for all.

“For behold, the LORD is coming out of His place;
He will come down
And tread on the high places of the earth.
The mountains will melt under Him,
And the valleys will split
Like wax before the fire,
Like waters poured down a steep place.”
Micah 1:3-4

1. “For behold, the LORD is coming out of His place”

a) That place is “His holy temple” (Heaven) {Micah 1:2; Psalm 11:4}
b) “Behold!” This would be a startling event! A spectacular moment!

2. “He will come down and tread on the high places of the earth”

a) The high places of the earth were the very places where shrines and temples were built for idolatrous worship.
b) The LORD will tread these places down with His feet.

3. The symbol of fire

a) Fire was also Isaiah’s symbol of God’s judgment (Isaiah 10:17).
b) Fire will melt the mountains and valleys of Israel till they are like wax melting in a fire.

The time of Israel’s judgment had come finally!
