I WILL GIVE THANKS TO YOU

Text: Psalm 18:45-46

THE COMMENCEMENT OF PSALM 18

King David began Psalm 18 by reflecting on who the LORD was to him. Through the long Psalm he reflected on the many lessons he had learned through life’s many experiences, especially in times war.

THE CONCLUSION OF PSALM 18

It was correct to conclude his psalm with giving thanks and praise to God.

Therefore I will give thanks to You, O LORD,

Among the Gentiles, and sing praises to Your name. 

Great deliverance He gives to His king;

And shows mercy to His anointed,

To David and his descendants forevermore.     Psalm 18:49-50

  1. The art of extolling the LORD

a) This has not been fully understood and learned yet

b) There were easier lessons to be learned first

  1. The giving of thanks to the LORD

a) The inferential particle is of importance

b) Giving of thanks was not:

i) A perfunctory act

ii) Neither was it just being polite

c) Giving of thanks is meaningful when:

i)   We recall and reflect deeply

ii)  When we remember how the Lord has granted His grace and mercy abundantly

iii) When He has spared and He has granted deliverance time and again

iv)  The heart must be filled with thanksgiving indeed

3.  The singing of praises to the LORD

a) This is to be given in praise of God’s name

b) Even among Gentiles (foreigners) would God’s name be praised

  1. Special reasons for giving thanks and singing praises

a) The deliverance God gives

b) The mercy God grants

c) The promise of such blessings

i)   To the Lord’s anointed (David as king of Israel)

ii)  To the descendants (amazing grace!)

Let us seek to teach our hearts to give thanks and to sing praises to the Lord till we have mastered them!
