Bearing Witness for Jesus
Text: John 9: 30
BEARING WITNESS FOR JESUS
The rigorous interrogations of the Pharisees pushed the former blind man to become a natural witness for the Lord Jesus Christ. Unwittingly, the Pharisees actually helped the former blind man to become even more certain about his knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
1. First Interview (John 9:15-16)
The former blind man simply stated the bare facts. “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” John 9:15
2. Second Interview (John 9:25-27)
a. His second statement was sharper. “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.” John 9:25
b. His third statement was stronger. “I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?” John 9:27
THE GROWING COURAGE AND SKILL OF THE FORMER BLIND MAN
When he heard how the Pharisees reviled him, he must have felt upset. But he was not intimidated at all, he spoke with a growing astuteness of mind.
“The man answered and said to them, ‘Why, this is a marvellous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! ‘”
John 9:30
1. The former blind man was unafraid, unlike his parents
a. He was not afraid of being ostracised.
b. He had lived in the streets, and was probably begging for a living.
c. He had lived with his blindness all his life and must have heard people speaking harshly to him.
d. Over the years, and in such harsh conditions, he had learned how not to be afraid.
2. He had learned other lessons in recent times
a. He had experienced compassion from Jesus.
b. He had felt His power that had healed him.
c. He must have felt a sense of gratitude to Jesus for healing him.
3. He mocked the Pharisees
a. For not knowing the Person who has power to heal the blind.
b. He mocked their ignorance and their incompetence if they were teacher and rulers.
c. Once again, he declared that Jesus had opened his eyes!
d. This was a refrain that was like music in his ears and worth repeating again and again.
e. He may not have been as educated as the Pharisees, but he had experienced a life-changing miracle.
He was not going to back down nor be intimidated by them.
