An Angry Response
Text: John 9: 34
AN ANGRY RESPONSE
The Pharisees were furious when they heard what the former blind man said. They resorted to what they had already agreed upon. They would expel any individual who spoke up for Jesus!
“They answered and said to him, ‘You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?’ And they cast him out.”
John 9:34
1. “They answered and said to him”
a. What their answer was not:
i. It was not a refutation of the simple knowledge of God expressed.
ii. It was not a refutation of the logic indicated.
iii. It was not an answer to the conclusion that the former blind man was indeed from God.
b. What the answer was:
i. Expression of embarrassment
ii. Anger
iii. And some guilt
2. They reviled the former blind man
a. Reviling indicates “insult, disgust” and more.
b. They scolded the former blind man severely:
i. That he was a terrible sinner.
ii. That he had been totally born in sin (thus his blindness..
c. But on what basis could they say things like that?
i. They had no basis.
ii. They only had their arrogance as Pharisees.
iii. They thought poorly of everyone else who were different from them.
iv. They abused their authority as leaders of the community yet again.
3. “And are you teaching us”
a. They were not prepared to listen to the former blind man.
b. They rejected his statements as if they were not even worthy of consideration.
4. And they cast him out
This was a move that they had planned. The casting out of the former blind man was a foregone conclusion.
