An Important Observation
Text: John 10: 8
AN IMPORTANT OBSERVATION
Jesus desired to teach deep and important truths to all who came to Him. His teachings brought life and hope to all who would receive His word. Some of His teachings included words of warning. These too were important to safe-guard the believers.
“All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.”
John 10:8
1. “Thieves and robbers”
a. Jesus was not speaking of actual thieves and robbers.
b. He was speaking of people who pose as teachers of God’s word.
c. But these were actually false teachers.
d. Their intentions were wrong and wicked.
2. Who were these “thieves and robbers?”
a. Recall how Jesus once cleansed the temple in Jerusalem (John 2:13-22).
b. The other Gospels also mentioned Jesus cleansing the temple (Matthew 21:12-13; Mark 11:15-17; Luke 19:45-46).
c. Jesus declared these solemn words to the merchants there:
“My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’” Matthew 21:13 (cf. Luke 19:46).
“Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations’?
But you have made it a den of thieves.” Mark 11:17.
d. The Gospel writers noted the people who were supposed to look after the Temple in a holy manner, had changed it into a place where they took advantage of all worshippers. In this way, they may be called “thieves!”
i. The chief priests.
ii. The scribes.
iii. The leaders of the people (Luke 19:47).
iv. These sought to kill Jesus, as thieves and robbers would respond when they are caught.
3. “The sheep did not hear them”
a. Those who had truly become the sheep of the Good Shepherd.
b. They had been well-taught.
c. They would only respond to the voice of their true Shepherd.
d. They were well-protected because they had Jesus to care for them as the Good Shepherd.
