The Hireling
Text: John 10: 12-13
THE HIRELING
Jesus offered a clear contrast between Himself and the hireling, just as He contrasted Himself against the thieves and robbers.
“But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep.”
John 10:12-13
1. Clear identification of the hireling
a. What he is
i. He is a hireling.
ii. He is hired to do the job of a shepherd.
iii. He sees being a shepherd as just a job and nothing else.
b. What he is not
i. He is not the shepherd.
ii. He does not own the sheep.
iii. Thus, he does not have a sense of ownership for the sheep.
iv. He feels nothing for the sheep at all.
c. What he will not do
i. He will not care for the sheep.
ii. He will not put himself in danger.
iii. He will not risk his life.
iv. He will not defend the sheep when a wolf threatens to attack the flock.
d. What he will do
i. He will flee in the face of danger.
ii. He is a coward at heart.
iii. He will expose the sheep to be killed by the wolf.
iv. He will allow the wolf to scatter the sheep.
2. The good Shepherd
Jesus stands out in this contrast that was offered! Jesus is the good and true shepherd who will give His life for the sheep. He does all that He can for the flock, because He loves them with a true heart of a good Shepherd.
