Far Away from Jerusalem
Text: John 10: 40-42
FAR AWAY FROM JERUSALEM
Jesus knew that to stay on in Jerusalem was pointless at this stage. Wisely, He withdrew.
“And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. Then many came to Him and said,
‘John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.’ And many believed in Him there.”John 10:40-42
1. “And He went away again”
a. This was not the first time Jesus withdrew from His ministry in Jerusalem (John 7:1).
b. This was a wise and gracious move on the part of Jesus.
c. Confrontation with the Jews would yield no fruits.
2. “Beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first and there He stayed”
a. Choosing Jordan
i. This place held special memories.
ii. Walking away from Jerusalem to Jordan was in itself a refreshing trip.
b. Precious memories
i. It was the place where John the Bpatist baptized many who came to hear him.
ii. It was here when the Holy Spirit descended on Him (Matthew 3:16).
iii. It was also the place where Jesus was baptized and received that special word from His Father (Matthew 3:17).
c. This short stay in Jordan
i. This would be a bit of a break for His faithful disciples.
ii. This would allow Him to minister in Galilee once again.
3. “Then many came to Him and said”
a. “John performed no sign”
This was true.
b. “But all the things that John spoke about this Man were true”
They remembered what John had said about the Christ (Matthew 3:1-12).
c. “And many believed in Him there”
The move to Jordan by Jesus was astute. His presence in Jordan resulted in many coming to believe in Jesus as the Christ who was sent by God.
