"You who hate good and love evil"

Text: Micah 3:2

AN ALARMING DESCRIPTION

Micah was not unaware of the terrible way in which the rulers went about doing their jobs.

“You who hate good and love evil;
Who strip the skin from My people,
And the flesh from their bones;
Who also eat the flesh of My people,
Flay their skin from them,
Break their bones,
And chop them in pieces
Like meat for the pot,
Like flesh in the caldron.”
Micah 3:2-3

1. The depth of the problem

a) These rulers hate good.

b) But they love evil.

2. A short list of their wicked activities

a) “Who strip the skin from My people”

i) This was cruel.

ii) This may be used figuratively to describe how they tortured people.

iii) This was not allowed by Mosaic Law.

b) “And the flesh from their bones”

i) This was even more cruel.

ii) This may be described as “barbaric”.

c) “Flay their skin from them”

i) This is similar to the idea of “strip the skin from My people”.

ii) This is used to describe the actual physical act of removing skin.

iii) This may be done by putting sharp objects at the tips of a whipping rope.

iv) These ropes would have the effect of flaying the skin.

d) “Break their bones”

i) This is brutal and torturous.

ii) This is uncalled for and not justifiable.

e) “Chop them in pieces like meat for the pot, like flesh in the caldron”

i) If this is to be taken literally, then it is cannibalism!

ii) If this is to be taken metaphorically, it describes great injustice in the nation.
