The Query of the Disciples
Text: John 11: 8-10
THE QUERY OF THE DISCIPLES
The Disciples could not help but express their concern as to why Jesus wanted to go back to Judea at all. Judea spelt danger to Jesus and His disciples.
“The disciples said to Him, ‘Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone You, and are You going there again?’ Jesus answered, ‘Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.’”
John 11:8-10
1. “The disciples”
a. “Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone You”
i. They had not forgotten how Jesus was nearly stoned.
ii. They loved Jesus as much as Martha and Mary did.
iii. They were reluctant to go to Judea because of the danger Jesus would surely encounter.
b. “And are You going there again”
i. They were puzzled.
ii. They were concerned.
iii. Was Jesus sure about this decision?
2. “Jesus answered”
a. His answer was in the form of teaching the disciples His principles of making a decision.
b. His decision was not based on emotions or any other kind of feeling.
c. The principles:
i. Walks in the light
If one walks in the light, he would not stumble.
ii. The light of the world
God gives light to all who enter into the world (John 1:9).
d. Jesus as the light of the world.
i. Jesus declared Himself the light of the world (John 8:12; 9:4).
ii. He would walk in the light that God had given to Him.
e. But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.
Jesus was not walking in the night. Only the person without light would be in danger!
