Martha's Conversation with Jesus
Text: John 11: 20-22
MARTHA’S CONVERSATION WITH JESUS
News that Jesus was coming to town caused Martha to seek Him out. She could not help but express her feelings candidly.
“Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house. Now Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.’”
John 11:20-22
1. “Martha… went and met Him”
a. Typically, Martha arose and went to see Jesus.
b. This was simply her personality.
2. “But Mary was sitting in the house”
a. This too was typically Mary.
b. She was more reserved than her sister Martha.
3. “Now Martha said to Jesus”
a. Martha was forthright.
b. She spoke her mind quickly.
4. “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died”
a. Martha, of course still spoke respectfully.
b. She still regarded and addressed Jesus as “Lord”.
c. Her tone was almost reproachful.
d. Why had not Jesus come immediately?
e. If He had, she knew that Jesus could have easily healed her brother.
f. Then he would not have died!
5. “But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You”
a. Martha continued to express some faith in Jesus.
b. If Jesus were to ask God for anything, she was confident that the Lord would grant it.
c. But her faith did not prompt her to ask what she desired in the depth of her heart.
d. She did not dare to voice out her hope that perhaps Jesus could ask God to raise her brother up.
This was an unspoken request from her heart. She felt that it was too late for wishful thinking!
